Are you planning to live in Luxembourg? Moving to a new country is a daunting process, and there are pros and cons to living in any country that expats must weigh up before making this life-changing decision. Here I share some pros and cons of living in Luxembourg for you to consider before your move.
Pros of Living in Luxembourg
Let me start with the good news.
1. Safety in Luxembourg
One of the most comforting aspects of living in Luxembourg is the feeling of safety. You can walk in any part of Luxembourg without fear. However, with every place in the world, there always exists a possibility of petty crimes, so it is always better to be aware of your surroundings.
2. Medical costs in Luxembourg
Another great advantage to working and living in Luxembourg is that you are in safe hands. The Healthcare system is great and almost all your healthcare needs are covered by public health insurance. Also, many employers offer supplemental health insurance to their employees. That helps pay for healthcare costs that are not covered by public health insurance, such as some eye care and dental treatments.

3. Public Transport in Luxembourg
Luxembourg is the only country in the world that offers free public transport to everyone. All public transport, including buses, trams, and trains can be used throughout the entire country without paying a penny. Also, public transport in Luxembourg is efficient, reliable, and is a pretty pleasant experience.
4. Cleanliness in Luxembourg
Generally, Luxembourgers and expats value discipline and are conscious of their responsibilities to keep their surroundings clean. The streets are well maintained and public transportation is pristine. Just make sure you’re equally respectful and dispose of your trash correctly.
5. Organized
Luxembourg is a well-planned and organized country. They have created an effective road maintenance system, and you can expect a certain level of reliability in public services.
6. Location
Luxembourg may be a tiny country but it offers a unique adventure that you can’t do in many other places in the world. From here, you have the possibility of visiting three different countries in one day!
Luxembourg is bordered by France, Belgium, and Germany, so you can jump in a car to explore or go shopping in another country.
7. Annual Leave & Public Holidays
Living and working in Luxembourg means that you are entitled to a minimum of 26 working days of paid leave and 10 public holidays per year. This helps you make the most of your trips throughout the year. Because travel from Luxembourg is easy, there are endless destinations in and around Europe that you can enjoy.
8. Family Friendly
Luxembourg is considered a great place to raise kids. In every corner of the country, you will find playgrounds and places devoted to making them happy. The schools are a multilingual melting pot and parents can choose from a range of national and international schools to enroll their children in the education system.
9. So Green
Lush greenery is another great thing about living in the Grand Duchy. The green spaces include parks as well as an abundance of forests and hiking areas in nearly every corner of the country. Even if you live in the city, you are never too far from the countryside. It’s definitely one of my favorite things about Luxembourg.
10. Multilingualism
The three official languages of Luxembourg are Luxembourgish, French, and German. English is widely spoken although it’s always worth learning the basic French phrases as it’s the main communication language.
Cons of Living in Luxembourg
Now for the cons.
1. Weather in Luxembourg
The weather and grey skies can make Luxembourg feel dreary and depressing, especially if you are a sunshine addict like me. The winters are long and there is no shortage of rainy days, but that means that you will value the blue-sky days more.
2. Rent in Luxembourg
It can be hard to find accommodation in Luxembourg, especially if you’ve got a new job and did not complete your probationary period yet. There’s a lot of competition and your income should be at least three times your rent to have the chance to be selected by the landlord.
Another downside about living in Luxembourg is that life can be expensive, with rent being your biggest expense. You should budget at least €700 to €1200 a month if you’re renting a room and around €1600 (charges included) to rent a studio or one-bedroom apartment.

3. Lack of Entertainment for Teens
Luxembourg has a reputation for being a boring country. I do not agree with that! People just need to dig a little deeper and they might be surprised. However, the country offers fewer entertainment options for teens and young adults in comparison to surrounding countries. For example, Luxembourg does not have amusement and theme parks.
4. Landlocked Country
Another downside of living in Luxembourg is the lack of coastline and easy access to the sea. Some people don’t particularly enjoy living in a landlocked country. Luckily, there are plenty of green spaces to enjoy the fresh air.

Good evening, Nesrine 🤗
Just moved 1 week ago to Luxembourg (hope the weather will stay nice, so it won’t make me run away) Being used to live in warm countries before, I am not sure how I’ll adapt… My fiance & I we’ll be here for about 1 year until we find a property in a sunny Mediterranean country.
Congratulations for your blog! It’s really helpful!
Best wishes,
Laura
