From time to time, I get asked, “So why Malta? “ Well, it was actually my husband’s idea! For those who don’t know, Dimitri and I had a long-distance relationship before living in Malta. At that time, he was planning to move from Paris to another country, and knowing that I wouldn’t survive cold and bad weather, he chose Malta for the sun and also for employment opportunities
Now, as I have been living in Malta for over three years, it’s easy to reflect on why I feel so at home here and to tell the truth, I’ve never thought this would happen. In fact, the adjustment period was not as easy as I imagined – The claustrophobic feeling being in such a tiny island, and the overdevelopment made me fall into a negative state of mind.
Luckily, I learned to like this island and accept its flaws. Of many reasons why I love living in Malta, here are my top 10.
10. You can enjoy geographical diversity without traveling too far
Malta is such a small island that you can travel from north to south in less than an hour. This means that all the facilities are so close. Plus, being able to escape the noise of an urban environment and be in a peaceful one (such as the beach or the countryside) in a short space of time is priceless.
9. It’s all about the laid-back lifestyle
Malta is famous for its laidback charm and easy coastal living. With long hot summers, proximity to the sea, and very slow-paced life, it is certainly one of the best places to experience the Mediterranean lifestyle. However, if you come from northern Europe, it might be hard to get used to it, but if you let yourself embrace slow living, you will definitely live a more relaxed life.
8. There is no language barrier
Malta has two official languages: Maltese and English. Maltese sounds like
7. There is no specific season to enjoy the outdoors
Maltese love the outdoors, and so do I. I would say that most houses and apartments have a balcony or a terrace, if not; they would most likely have a shared roof in the building. With a favorable climate, people can enjoy the outdoors all year long. Gather friends and family for some grilling during the barbecue season, sit on a pub’s patio and enjoy a drink, go for a walk along the promenade, or simply sit on a bench and enjoy the sea view.
6. One of the safest countries in EU to live in
There is a strong sense of security being in Malta. As a woman, I feel very safe walking outside at night. People here can roam around drunk and alone at 2 a.m. and nothing will happen to them. Since Malta is a tiny country where even small incidents hit the headlines, one just
5. An enormous mixing of nationalities
Malta is a big melting pot. On a daily basis, you can work, have a chat and gather with people from different countries. Having neighbors, friends,
4. The challenge of living abroad
As someone who bores easily, the challenge of leaving my comfort zone, the process of adapting to a new home and the frustration of dealing with different systems made my life more interesting and exciting.
3. Life by the sea is awesome
This is the best thing that can happen to someone who loves the sea as much as I do. It is so liberating and relaxing. Although, I do believe that Malta does not have the greatest beaches, but they are so close, which is great. I like to go for a quick dip right away after work or during the weekend to cool off. Furthermore, it’s possible to swim here from April to October. What more should I ask for!
2. It’s all sunshine and blue skies
Needless to say, that the weather is so important to my daily life, so certainly, climate is the thing I love the most about Malta. Mild winters, hot summers (incredibly humid though), 300 days of sunshine …. Weather here is just perfect for my mood.
1. Me in Malta
I love the person I’ve become in Malta. I feel happier, healthier and less stressed or frustrated. Now that I’ve left my native country and made it work hundreds of kilometers away from home, I feel like I am capable of anything!
