Guide to Living in Luxembourg: FAQ About Expat Life
I’ve included some of my previous posts which go into more detail about specific topics. Make sure you check them out too.
Why did you move to Luxembourg?
The response to this question will be different for everyone. My husband and I moved to Luxembourg after one and a half years of full-time travel around Asia. The outbreak of the pandemic forced us to halt our adventure and fly back to Europe. My husband was offered a job in Luxembourg – and everything happened very quickly. We have never visited Luxembourg before, so we had no prior experience of the country but we were happy to start a new chapter of our expat life.
Is it expensive to live in Luxembourg?
The living expenses in Luxembourg depend on different factors, such as where you live and how often you eat out. A large part of your budget will be used to pay rent, utilities, and food. The cost of going out and drinking alcohol is fairly high and beauty treatments are quite expensive, however, public transportation, healthcare, and public education are free. That said, compared to other countries, the cost of living in Luxembourg is well balanced.

How do you choose a place to live in Luxembourg?
The housing situation in Luxembourg is quite difficult, with not much choice and not always the best standards, especially in Luxembourg City where most buildings are old.
My advice would be to arrange a short-term lease for your first months in Luxembourg City. There are many apartments listed on Airbnb. We lived in company accommodation in Belair for a month and then rented a place in Rollingergrund for one month. That gave us time to get a feel of different areas in the city and visit other neighborhoods in the suburbs.

What is it like living in Luxembourg? Is Luxembourg boring?
Luxembourg is beautiful, cosmopolitan, clean, and safe. From what I can see, most expats love the quality of life and the ease of settling in. However, some foreigners can have a hard time adjusting to life in Luxembourg, especially young professionals who come from busy cities.
Luxembourg is small and more family-friendly than many other European cities. You won’t find 10 different clubs to choose from each night but this doesn’t mean you can’t have a wild time here.
Do you have to learn the local language?
Business is conducted in English so the answer to that is no. Having to deal with customer services and not speaking Luxembourgish or French can be a barrier but otherwise, there is no impact.
Is it easy to make friends in Luxembourg?
Pursuing hobbies and socializing with colleagues are probably going to be your number one way to meet people. Also, online groups are a great way to make new friends. There are a few expatriate groups on Facebook such as Girl Gone International that is full of others who are new and want to meet people. I’ve met a few of my friends through this online community. I think it’s a great way to make connections.
What’s the dating scene like in Luxembourg?
As a married lady, I have no idea, but from what I hear, single adults may feel lonely in this family-oriented country. Dating in Luxembourg can be a bit harder compared to other countries, but of course, everyone has their own experience.
How do you cope with the bad weather?
Honestly, I’ve never thought that I’d accept the idea of moving to a cold country, but you never know what life has in store for you.
In my opinion, one of the worst things about living in Luxembourg has got to be the weather! It doesn’t rain all the time, but it is cloudy and grey a lot. It’s safe to say that summers are not bad.
Changing my mindset has helped me a lot. I learned that I won’t be happy here if I can’t make peace with the weather, so now the rain and the cold don’t stop me from having fun. I also enjoy the cozy days at home.
